Trust Nothing - a new perspective
/Once upon a time, system administrators working for a company had to allow everyone to do anything on their computers… software just wouldn’t work if we didn’t! Dozens and dozens of software packages require users to have a very high level of access to their own computers, letting them install software, run updates, change configurations, and of course upgrade to the newest versions - if you didn’t, users either couldn’t work, or the technical staff for that company was overwhelmed managing software issues!
Also - over time, Microsoft and even Adobe have figured out how to update their software without requiring admin-level credentials. It’s rediculous to think that almost any user in a “controlled” network could run updates on Adobe, or install Teams, and NOT require an admin to do that!
Switch to today … cyber security is on everyone’s mind. Not a week goes by without some company being hacked, launching ransomware, or we find spyware hiding in the latest Outlook tool for spellchecking. We even have to be cautious if a trusted vendor pushes out a bad update.
As a provider of computer/technology services, it’s our duty to be on the know, to understand how our clients work, and what we can do to empower the users, but not limit the company. However, because everything is a risk, and because humans are the worst enemy of security - we have to do more, we have to do better.
Today, the concept of “Zero Trust” is taking stronghold in our clients and our customer base. Email filtering, application whitelisting, reporting on user activity, and of course, education are the eminent technologies leading the most cybersecurity efforts.
We are poised, ready and we have the tools TODAY that can keep our clients safe. It’s a new era and expanding above and beyond just supporting our clients, to making sure we’re SECURING our clients as well! If you want to talk cyber security, please contact us today!
